why kolar gold field closed

Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) has been closed since 2001 for a mix of economic and environmental reasons, which include:

  • .The operating cost is very high, and this makes the mines not economically viable as they cannot be operated anymore.

  • Low gold production: The ounce of gold per tonne of ore declined from 45 grams in the 1880s to less than 3 grams at the time of closure.

  • Environmental issues: The mine resulted in an enormous amount of waste; the company dumped millions of tons, including cyanide piles, into an area known locally as "cyanide hills." These piles become collectors of dust and dust, sulfurous oxide into the atmosphere contaminating the air.

  • Lack of resources: The area lacked basic requirements such as food, water, and shelter.
The mines, KGF, were among the world's deepest gold mines measuring 3,000 meters in depth. The first working of the mines was done by the British in the year 1880, and the mines were nationalized in the year 1956.

Some of the notable facts about KGF:

  • Historical Importance: Commercial mining activities commenced here in 1880 by the John Taylor and Sons Company. In the colonial period, KGF emerged as an industrial powerhouse location.

  • The shafts of the KGF mines are among the deepest in the world and go down as deep as 10,000 feet.

  • The KGF is an Anglo-Indian elite community from whose dictations everything flows, from lifestyle to architecture, schools, and even ways of thinking.

  • Economy: There is no doubt that the economy of KGF was really battered by the time the mines closed down in 2001, but this old town still retains all the old-world charm and film success of the "KGF" franchise has brought it much more attention.

  • Tourist Attraction :Though the mines have been closed down, KGF is an attraction to historians, and it features old colonial buildings, churches, and scenic places.
